Casual vs commercial collecting
The 25/250 story is for personal, non-commercial use. The minute the plan is inventory for Etsy, a rock shop, or a paid tour that takes material, you are in a different line at the field office.
Casual (hobby)
- You keep it, gift it, or tumble it at home
- Hand tools
- Under the daily/yearly cap on open BLM
- No claim, no exclusive pile
Not casual
- Selling rough or finished stone from that take
- Repeated trips to stock a business
- Heavy equipment, pumps, or a crew
- Mining claims and mineral materials contracts — different paperwork
If you want to sell Utah material, ask BLM or SITLA about the lawful path. Don’t launder a commercial pile through “I was rockhounding.”
Informational only. Commercial and hobby lines are fact-specific. Ask the field office before you scale up.
