Caineville Agate & Jasper Rockhounding Site Guide (Utah)
A 5-page printable PDF for the agate, jasper and petrified wood site near Caineville, on Highway 24 east of Capitol Reef. The Utah Geological Survey describes gray and brown hills on BLM public land scattered with agate, chert, red jasper and small pieces of petrified wood, with specimens “within yards of your car.” It's an easy stop: paved highway, no digging, no hammer needed. The catch is the neighbors. On the Utah ownership layer, private land starts about 100 feet from UGS's map pin, a state section sits half a mile away, and Capitol Reef National Park, where collecting is prohibited, is just to the west. This guide puts what the public sources say about the site in one place, plus the land-status rules for where you're standing.

What's inside
- Page 1: what you can find (agate and chert in white, gray, green, purple, orange and red; red jasper; tan petrified wood; the big black volcanic boulders), the geology in 30 seconds, and where UGS says to look
- Page 2: land status and rules: BLM casual collecting, the petrified-wood limit (25 lb plus one piece a day, 250 lb a year), the private parcel next to the pin, the nearby state section and when you need a Trust Lands permit there ($25, bought separately from the state, not included), the national park, mining claims, tools, selling and artifacts, with color-coded verdicts, plus a step-by-step MLRS mining-claim check and a private and state-land check
- Page 3: getting there on paved SR-24 as UGS publishes the route, milepost notes, the two UGS-published coordinates (marked "verify before you go") with what's at each, best season, camping, services and cell signal
- Page 4: tools to bring and leave home, desert and flash-flood safety, where the park boundary is, before-you-collect and drive-out checklists, and a trip log
- Page 5: who to call (BLM Richfield Field Office and Henry Mountains Field Station, Trust Lands, UGS, Capitol Reef) and 22 numbered sources, each with its link
What it isn't
No secret GPS pins or "honey hole" directions, and no promise of finds. The only coordinates are the points the Utah Geological Survey publishes on its own Rockhounder map. And it isn't a guide to collecting in Capitol Reef National Park: you can't collect there. Where a public source didn’t confirm something (a season, current claims, fuel, cell coverage), the guide says so and tells you who to ask.
Good for
Capitol Reef road-trippers, families, first-time rockhounds, and anyone driving Highway 24 between Torrey and Hanksville.
