Utah rockhounding: who owns the ground

Every rule below links to the Utah article that explains it, with sources and its own last-checked date.

Is rockhounding legal in Utah? Sometimes. The wash does not answer the question. The owner does. On ordinary Bureau of Land Management ground, personal collecting of common rocks and specimens is generally allowed without a permit if you stay inside casual-use limits. On a state park, a national park, or school-trust land, the same bucket can be a violation.

2026 update: monument boundaries changed. Read 2026 Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bears Ears changes: can you collect there now?

SITLA vs BLM in Utah

Trust land is not BLM. Same dirt road, different rules. How to tell before you dig.

Fossils on Utah BLM

Common invertebrate fossils can fall under BLM casual use. Vertebrate bone does not.

Utah hunting

Before any Utah trip

  1. Owner layer: Federal/BLM, State/SITLA, private, tribal, or park. Which map layer to turn on.
  2. Overlay: monument, ACEC, wilderness, recreation site.
  3. Claim: MLRS for that township and section.
  4. Cap: weight, hand tools, personal use.
  5. Exit: you can still drive out with what you picked up. A full 5-gallon bucket is often already near the daily line.

Rules that work the same way in every state: before you leave pavement, how heavy is 25 pounds, hand tools, casual vs commercial, mining claims, paid digs.
